COMMODITY TAX

Definition

  • Levied on property and services
  • Refers to Sales Tax, HST/GST
  • Indirect taxes
    • fuel
    • tobacco
    • alcohol
  • All paid at the time of purchase and can be hidden in the purchase price

Recovery

  • Vast majority of entities are unaware they overpay commodity taxes.
  • Overpayments occur:
    • inside the system, re clerical errors, mis-interpretation, etc.
    • outside the system; may occur because of changes in Government policies, procedures, administration, tax interpretation, court decisions, new issues and rulings.

The latter is where many recoveries occur and where CTC excels in up to date knowledge and expertise.
